WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND A “FILLER?”

We hear this all the time. Neurotoxins like Botox, Dysport and Xeomin and Fillers like Radiesse, Perlane, Restylane, Juvederm and Belotero are all injected into the skin but they do very different things to the appearance. Sometimes toxins and fillers are used together and sometimes separately depending on the need and desired effects.

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are used to soften the frown lines or “angry 11’s” between the eyebrows, the bow area, horizontal lines across the forehead, the crow’s feet and can relieve the heaviness of the upper eyelid. The product begins to show results between 3-14 days depending on the patient and can last 3-5 months. Dr. Eidelman uses advanced techniques allowing the patient to look natural and smoother without appearing “frozen” or “done.”

Fillers do what the word implies– they “fill.” Radiesse, Perlane, Restylane, Juvederm and Belotero (and Sculptra although technically not a filler) replace volume where collagen and bone have been lost with age. Some fillers are injected directly into wrinkles like the lines between the nose and mouth or the smoker’s lines around the lips. Often the results are much better when these products are used in a broader area for a “mini-lift” giving the face fullness, freshness and better bone contouring. Radiesse, Perlane, Restylane, Juvederm and  Belotero have an immediate result with minimal swelling in most patients and can last 6 months-1 year. Sculptra works in a very different way. The results build over time, usually 4-6 weeks, and can last up to 2 years.

All these product are FDA approved and any possible side effects are clearly outlined prior to a treatment. Call Chelsea Skin & Laser for your cosmetic consultation. For more info on toxins and fillers visit chelseaskincenter.com.
