Melasma is a common skin condition causing dark colored spots generally around the eyes, nose and cheeks. Sun exposure makes the condition more noticeable even after it might have faded. Certain skin care products or hormonal changes in the body during pregnancy, while using birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy may also trigger melasma. Using a daily sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is a great place to start if you have melasma since even a small amount of ultraviolet light can cause a recurrence. Topical treatments are available to lighten discolorations.
