Sculptra

How does Sculptra work?

Sculptra is best for restoration or correction of the signs of facial aging. Sculptra works on shallow to deep contours to add fullness, erase smile lines and smooth wrinkles. Sculptra is unique in that it works gradually over time to replace collagen that is lost during the aging process. It contains poly-L-lactic acid which helps to stimulate a gradual building of your own collagen.

In our experience, Chelsea Skin & Laser, recommends 2-3 injection treatments 4-8 weeks apart. The results are gradual and subtle. The product continues to improve for approximately 3 months after treatment. Sculptra gives natural-looking results that can last 1-2 years.

The Sculptra procedure is very tolerable for most. There is anesthetic in the product so your skin will numb as the procedure proceeds. We recommend you arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time to have a topical anesthetic applied to minimize initial discomfort. Your face may feel numb for 1-2 hours after the treatment.

What are side effects of treatment?

Some patients experience redness, bruising, bleeding, itching, swelling, and injection site discomfort are common. Less common side effects include small lumps which may sometimes be noticeable. Occasionally these lumps may occur several months after treatment and most resolve without treatment.

You may resume normal activity immediately after your treatment. Your skin may appear swollen for up to 48 hours and there may be mild bruising of the skin. Makeup can be applied immediately after to cover minor bruising or redness. Minimize strenuous exercise and exposure to extensive sun or heat within the first 24 hours following treatment.

You may experience puffiness for up to two weeks and then the area will look very similar to the way it appeared pre-treatment. Most people will start to develop new collagen after about 4 weeks and the result will gradually improve over 3 months.

Aftercare is important!

It is very important that you massage the area as directed 3 times per day for 10 minutes with a gentle moisturizer for one week. Consistent massage will help stimulate a more even layer of collagen and reduce the risk of nodule formation.

What should I discuss with my practitioner prior to my treatment?

Do not use Sculptra if you are allergic to any ingredient of the product or have a history of keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring. If there is any history of herpes on the face, we recommend taking an oral antiviral pill prior to your treatment. Bruising risks can be minimized by avoiding aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, ibuprofen, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, concentrated garlic and alcohol for one week prior to treatment.

Avoid dental work, including teeth cleaning, at least 2 weeks prior and one month following treatment. Avoid oral surgery at least 4 weeks prior and one month post treatment.
