SNOW IN SUMMER – WHAT TO DO ABOUT DANDRUFF

Dandruff can strike any time of year. It’s more than just an embarrassing nuisance, it’s a dermatologic condition called Seborrheic Dermatitis (SD).  Those little white flakes cause us to change our hairstyles, try a variety of expensive over the counter products, and they make it rather difficult to wear the most popular go-to color – black.

The exact cause of the uncomfortable flaking, red scalp and itching is unknown. Research supports that for some people it is linked to how our body responds to a yeast called Malasezzia.  There is also the medical opinion that dandruff may be a mild form of psoriasis.

Dandruff is rarely harmful but, if severe enough, can cause hair-loss.  A mild form will easily respond to more frequent shampooing or a longer lathering period. More stubborn, advanced cases benefit from topical medications applied directly to the affected area.

There are numerous treatment methods available. Prescribed therapies range from shampoos to solutions to ointments containing anti-inflammatories, anti-fungals, and vitamin-D derivatives.  We have found that a combination approach may be needed for the maximum resolution.  Explore your options for top dandruff treatments and tips at Chelsea Skin & Laser.
